They Cloned Tyrone (2023) on Netflix. A fun movie! Scooby-Doo meets Get Out. A mystery-comedy with a ragtag trio (a pimp, a prostitute, and a drug dealer) stumbling onto a sinister government conspiracy in their neighborhood. A social satire about blaxploitation. If you don’t laugh, I’m worried about you. Watch the trailer.

The Black Phone (2021) on Netflix. In 1978, teen boys go missing in a Colorado town. Another boy is kidnapped and kept in a sound-proof basement. He thinks there’s no chance for survival until the disconnected phone rings (the black phone) and he receives information that may help him. I love the twist in this story. It’s creative and different. Not the usual horror movie. This was my second viewing because I wanted to reacquaint myself with it to watch the second movie, The Black Phone 2. I hope it’s just as good.
Americana (2023) on Hulu. Better than I thought it would be. I’d call it modern frontier noir or a neo-western crime thriller. “When a rare Lakota Ghost Shirt falls onto the black market in a small South Dakota town, the lives of local outsiders and outcasts violently intertwine. Some seek fortune and some seek personal freedom, while others simply want to return the artifact to its proper tribal home.” IMDb. Some moments made me gasp, laugh, and some were gratifying. I’d give it a firm B. It’s as fun as it seems in the trailer.

Series
Abandoned (2026) on Hulu. (Spanish with subtitles) Three young siblings are left at a train station in Barcelona in 1984. They don’t know their parents’ names or even their last names. Forty years later, they begin the search for answers. Through DNA and looking through old pictures, they are able to piece together a general picture of what happened and why.
The Takedown: American Aryans (2025) on HBO Max. Focuses on the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas (ABT). How it got started and how the cops took them down. (They say that they dismantled it. But I think groups like that never really die. Or maybe they turn into something else.) Covers locations from Dallas to Beaumont, to Odessa. But big surprise, mainly it’s in east Texas. sarcasm The cult-like group was the most powerful organized crime syndicate in America at the time.
Body in the Basement (2025) on HBO. Just like it sounds. Stories of people discovering bodies hidden in basements. I guess it happens more than we know. It happens enough that they’ve made a series with the stories!
The Eternaut (2025) on Netflix. (Spanish with subtitles) “One summer’s night in Buenos Aires, a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. Juan Salvo and his friends embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth. The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own.” IMDb
Based on the comic with the same name, which first appeared in 1957. At times I thought it had the feeling of Lost and any drama about surviving an alien invasion. “Eternaut” means “an eternal traveler” or “traveler through eternity.” So I’m expecting time travel to be a part of it some time. It’s entertaining enough that I want to see what happens.
