River, Eden, and more 1/9/2026
My recommendations for the week.
TV shows-
Down Cemetery Road on Apple TV. Based on the book by Mick Herron. Emma Thompson stars as a private investigator who helps a nosy housewife investigate the disappearance of a child after a house has been bombed.
River on Amazon Prime. Stellan Skarsgård plays a homicide detective who is trying to solve his partner’s murder. The twist is that he is plagued with hallucinations. Long with some twists. Interesting and compelling. About personal demons. At the end I was glad I watched it. Limited series.
Movies (Seems to be a Netflix week)
Eden, on Netflix. “A group of disillusioned Europeans settles on a remote, uninhabited island in the Galápagos. They soon discover that their greatest threat isn’t the brutal climate or deadly wildlife, but one another. As tensions spiral and desperation takes hold, a twisted power struggle unfolds, leading to betrayal, violence and death.” I was immersed. It’s crazy and intense. I highly recommend if you like survival movies or even westerns. Based on real life events.
Murder in Monaco on Netflix. I wasn’t expecting the twists in this documentary. Have snacks and beverage on hand because you won’t want to pause this for a minute.
Relay on Netflix. Full of action and intrigue. “A bribe broker facilitates deals between corrupt companies and their threats. He breaks his own rules when a client needs protection, complicating his usual operations.” I figured out where it was going but I still enjoyed it to the end. Tense.
This week’s book recommendation-
For Every Evil Under the Sun- An anthology of stories written by Alexandra Burt, Laura Oles, and your truly (V.P. Chandler, in case you’ve forgotten. LOL) Published by the boutique press Fredonia Ink.
Three distinct voices. One shared truth: nothing stays buried forever.
In this gripping collection of nine literary suspense stories, three women writers explore the fragile boundary between ordinary life and the darkness that lurks just beneath it. Taut, lyrical, and quietly unsettling, For Every Evil Under The Sun is a testament to how women carry grief, danger, and desire-and what happens when those forces break through.
From a crumbling childhood home, and a silent beach stalked by an unseen presence, to a dusty Texas ranch soaked in blood and betrayal-each tale peels back the surface of ordinary lives to reveal the darkness pulsing underneath. A Vegas showgirl with one last score. A dream shattered in a city of stars. Two women lost in a maze of suburban perfection. A family secret buried beneath generations of silence.
Together, these authors weave a tapestry of suspense that spans continents and generations, proving that no matter where you are or who you are, the darkest corners of the human experience are never far away. They ask: What do we do when the past won’t stay dead? When safety is just an illusion? And what happens when women step out of the roles the world has written for them? Lyrical, bold, and deeply atmospheric, For Every Evil Under The Sun lingers long after the final page.
Available on Amazon or any local book store.
